The old SAFRA Bukit Merah clubhouse
Today, adrenaline junkies flock to SAFRA Adventure Sports Centre at Yishun for anything to do with adventure sports, like sport climbing and abseiling.
However, before the sports centre in SYCC was opened 2005, did you know that the old SAFRA Bukit Merah used to house one of the first rock-climbing walls in Singapore?

SAFRA opened the Bukit Merah clubhouse back in 1982. Together with SAFRA Tampines, SAFRA Bukit Merah set up a rock-climbing wall in 1989, where a dummy soldier could be seen repelling at the top of the building.
A year later, SAFRA held the first Nationwide Rock-Climbing Competition. In 1994, SAFRA Bukit Merah birthed Singapore’s first indoor rock gym. That same year, full-time NSmen (NSFs) were also given free SAFRA membership for their national defence contribution.
After 23 long years, SAFRA Bukit Merah finally closed its doors and moved to new premises. The clubhouse was renamed SAFRA Mount Faber and was officially opened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in March 2005. Continuing its passion for adventure sports, SAFRA launched a brand new annual adventure race, AVventura, which adventure sports enthusiasts look forward to every year.
