What better way to kick off 2016 than to set a new record for SAFRA AVventura? The 10th edition saw a new record set with 104 parent-and-child teams participating this year!

Supported by the Families for Life Council (FFL), the FFL Challenge began with a 2.55km run for the Ultra Kids category from the flag off point at SAFRA Yishun to around Yishun Park. The FFL Challenge Super Kids category flagged off shortly later. After which, teams returned to the club to collect their race passports before they proceeded to complete mystery challenges.

What's different this year was that teams were allowed to choose the order of challenges to tackle. Activity stations were scattered in various spots around SAFRA Yishun and Yishun Park, putting teams' navigation skills to the test.

FFL Challenge activities featured along the race route had always been a hot favourite, which led to a significant 28 percent increase in participation from last year. The total number of activities for the FFL Challenge categories also doubled this year to double the fun!

One of the new FFL Challenge activities includes Unicycling (did anybody guess it from our pre-event clue?) from the Ultra Kids category.

According to first-time participants, father Alfiyan Harith and his son Aide Alfiyan, the Unicycling challenge was a tough one. Yet they pushed themselves to overcome it, with Aide on the wheel and Alfiyan supporting him, before both powered through the rest of the race. Their favourite race activity? The Canopy Sky Walk.

One of the exciting mystery challenge this year was the Slope Climbing. Though it got a little wet 'n wild, and some difficulty was encountered as they attempted to climb the slope, many participants wore smiles on their faces as they reached the top!

This year, the FFL Challenge saw new champions for the Ultra Kids and Super Kids categories; Ong Kok Heng and his daughter Shannon with a timing of 1 hour and 30 minutes, and Daniel Tham and his son Luke with a timing of 1 hour and 51 minutes respectively.

The other categories, Ultra, Sprint and Youth, also had their fair share of fun in their more physically demanding 32 to 35km race routes. From SAFRA Yishun to Simpang Yishun, 102 teams ran 2.6km to collect their race route map before being allocated to different stations.

Among the challenges were Balloon Challenge, 'wefie' Photo Hunt and Archery. While they may sound easy, the Balloon Challenge and Archery (with Peel & Munch Challenge) were actually part of the Team-based Mystery Challenges, which participants had to complete with one shoe tied to the shoe of their race partner using a cable tie. Besides the mystery tasks, teams cycled, kayaked and executed high-element challenges such as diagonal abseiling and jumaring.

Clinching first place in the Men's Ultra category were Jen Wira and Chua Ying Zhi at 4 hours and 28 minutes, followed by veteran SAFRA AVventura racers Joseph Foo and Hadi Masron with just 10 minutes between them. Neo Sze Kai and Tan Teck Wee came in third only 5 minutes later. Most of the other categories also saw very close races in the top three.

Congratulations to all winners and participants! Look out for more fun at the next SAFRA event!
